Second PPCA Course in Hamburg a Success

Second PPCA Course in Hamburg a Success

Continuing with the Peterson Pest Control Academy series, the IPM for Managers and Sales People course took place in Hamburg during the last week of June. The two-day course focused on specific skills to enable participants to begin IPM operations in their own offices, including creating a business plan, marketing, pricing, and competition. As with the first PPCA course, we were fortunate to have a diverse group of participants, representing the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and Greece. On the first day, speaker Vasilis Sotiroudas familiarized the participants with the vast range of IPM services provided by Control Union, from conducting a GAP analysis to heat and phosphine fumigations. They also worked through an in-depth fumigation case study, taking notes of high risk areas and insect entry points. The second day of the course switched gears to economics, focusing on the financial logistics of opening a pest control business. Speakers Johan Maris and Peter de Weert explained the trajectory of pest control within Control Union’s global operations, and Baldur Grunt from Detia Degesch gave the participants an introduction to the company’s cutting edge fumigants. The participants then investigated a case study of a Russian client, learning how to maintain excellent service and customer service from sale to project completion. The next course in the PPCA series is Heat and Controlled Atmosphere, which will be held on 11-13 September in...

First Pest Management Training Course in Chalkida

In the second week of May, Control Union colleagues from all over the globe met in Greece to participate in the first ever Peterson Pest Control Academy. Participants came from three continents, representing Indonesia, Thailand, Israel, Tunisia, the Netherlands, and Greece. The enthusiastic group also represented a variety of professional backgrounds and experience with pest control, resulting in lively discussions. The instructors covered both theory and practice, first teaching the participants about basic entomology and common pests, and then leading into hands-on practice. Speaker Christos Athanassiou taught insect biology with his diverse collection of glass-encased insects, while Hagit Navarro conducted a course on CEPA and Vasilis Sotiroudas explained target groups, sales and competition. After learning the theory, the students used the PPCA facility as a case study, creating a real IPM plan for the site and practicing setting up insect and rodent traps. They also had the opportunity to practice spraying and fogging the site using industry equipment. With the guidance of Ms. Navarro, the participants completed a full CEPA (Confederation of European Pest Management Associations) training, and they were awarded international CEPA certificates, allowing them to perform pest management audits in their respective countries. The next PPCA course, Phosphine Fumigation, will take place 10-13 July, providing an in-depth analysis into phosphine’s various applications, as well as risks, monitoring, and...

Control Union involved in improving Hygiene in Refugee Camps

Control Union involved in improving Hygiene in Refugee Camps

Recently AgroSpeCom / Control Union Greece applied our HEAT TREATMENT technique in a new and unique, but simultaneously miserable, environment; a temporary residency for refugees in Northern Greece. More then 1,5 million refugees crossed into Europe since the beginning of 2015 due to major crises situations in for example Libya and especially Syria. Although there are huge initiatives undertaken to cope with this influx, and thousands of professionals and volunteers work hard every day to arrange proper living situations for these displaced people, actual situations in temporary residencies or refugee camps are often extremely poor. Unfortunately (much too) many people packed in one place, combined with extremely low hygiene possibilities, is an ideal situation for the development of major pest populations. Consequently, residents often suffer from extreme discomfort from mites, flee and bed bugs. As you may image, traditional pest control methods such as fogging or spraying with (toxic) contact insecticides are not an option in these specific situations, but applying HEAT is. Residents only have to be replaced for up to approximately 10 hours, while their belongings and set up can remain in place and the HEAT does its work and kills all mentioned pests in all stages by reaching over 50C. In this case, the treated locations were small, but the solution is applicable in (much) bigger locations also. CU Greece offered a major discount as per its commercial tariff so that the client, a local NGO, was able to help the people they help so selflessly.     Photo 1: An electrical heater placed inside a room.               Photo 2:...
